Assessment and Reporting

Purpose
The purpose of assessment is to provide information for teachers, children, parents, and administrators regarding the efficacy of the learning program and analysis of the child’s performance within it, to guide future planning and practice.

  • To continuously record information of individual students and groups to guide our learning process.
  • To inform teachers about the learning process.
  • To track individual progress.
  • To insure that assessment, recording and reporting are used efficiently to benefit students.
  • To provide information for planning resources.

Guidelines
Assessment is used in the following ways:

Formative assessment: It is interwoven with the daily learning and helps teachers and children find out what the children already know in order to plan the next stage of learning.  Formative assessment and teaching are directly linked; neither can function effectively or purposely without the other.

Summative assessment: Takes place at the end of the teaching and learning process and gives the children opportunities to demonstrate what has been learned.  Summative assessments may include any of, and any combination of, the following: acquisition of data, synthesis of information, application of knowledge and process.

Methods of Assessment
JKS identifies the following methods of assessment as central to the work of school teachers. They cover a broad range of approaches, from the more subjective and intuitive to the more objective and scientific. When ALL the approaches are applied they provide a balanced view of the student.

Observations Performance

Process Focused assessments

  • The students’ transdisciplinary skills are observed often and regularly and the observations are recorded by:
  • noting both typical as well as non-typical behaviors
  • collecting multiple observations to enhance reliability
  • synthesizing evidence from different contexts to increase validity.
  • A system of note taking and record keeping is created that minimizes writing and recording time.

Selected responses

  • Student performance and understanding of basic concepts and skills of class work and activities is measured.
  • Quizzes evaluate the student's understanding of a small section of a unit and tests measure a student's understanding at the end of a unit.

Open ended tasks

  • Activities completed in class and at home that allow a student to develop connections and reinforce learning provide essential assessment information.
  • Homework activities reinforce work covered in class and refine particular concepts or skills. Since homework is assigned to be used in class and supports sequential learning, the expectation is that it is completed earnestly, by stipulated deadlines.

Portfolios

  • These are collections of children’s work that are designed to demonstrate successes, growth, higher order thinking, creativity and reflection.
  • A portfolio should be thought of as an exhibition of an active mind at work.

Grading / Rubrics
Skills, activities and learner attributes are measured with rubrics set according to standards of learning and grade level expectations. All work should be reflected upon for corrective measures and as further opportunities for learning.

Reporting / Feedback
Assessments are used to improve performance and reporting periods reflect this by providing opportunities for feedback.
