The Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years Programme curriculum model is displayed in the shape of an octagon with eight academic areas or subject groups surrounding the tools and features which help the students develop their understanding. The emphasis is on the fluidity of the system and the interrelatedness of the subjects. Aspects of global contexts are addressed naturally within the distinct disciplines.  

The framework is flexible enough to allow a school to include other subjects not determined by the IB but which may be required by local authorities. Schools may deliver the programme in any language under certain conditions, although IB services are provided in a limited number of languages. Taken as a whole, the curriculum provides a balanced education that will equip young people for effective participation in the modern world.

  • Language and Literature: the student’s best language, usually the school’s language of instruction
  • Language Acquisition: an additional modern language learned at school
  • Individuals and Societies: history, geography, business, and psychology
  • Sciences: biology, chemistry, physics
  • Mathematics: one course including five branches of mathematics: number, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, probability and statistics, and discrete mathematics
  • Arts: visual arts and performing arts
  • Physical and health education: one course including a wide range of physical activities along with the theories behind health education
  • Design: digital and product design
