Toddlers B Newsletter-Eid Celebration

This Eid Al Fitr, our toddlers had an awesome celebration! They dressed up in their best Eid outfits and had a great time dancing together during circle time. They enjoyed yummy sweet treats with their friends in class and were super excited to go to the auditorium for a magical show. One of our curious little ones got to go on stage and be part of the fun. All the kids were completely fascinated by the performance.

unit of inquiry : a bug's life

We are thrilled to share that our pre-K students are currently immersed in the IB curriculum unit of inquiry titled “A Bug’s Life.” This engaging theme has sparked the curiosity and excitement of our young learners as they delve into the fascinating world of insects and bugs.

Throughout this unit, our students are actively exploring the characteristics, habitats, and life cycles of various bugs. They are engaging in hands-on activities, observations, and experiments to deepen their understanding of the importance of bugs in our ecosystem. From bug hunts to bug-themed art projects, our students are actively exploring and learning about these tiny creatures that play a significant role in our environment.

This unit not only enhances our students’ scientific knowledge but also fosters their curiosity, critical thinking, and observation skills. Our dedicated teachers have planned a range of activities to make learning about bugs fun and interactive for our pre-K students.

We are excited to witness our students’ growth and learning as they continue to explore the world of bugs in this captivating unit of inquiry.

Grade 1 Unit of Inquiry

It is a pleasure to exhibit the wonderful work our Grade 1 students have been producing across this Unit of Inquiry topic – Where We Are in Place and Time. Within this unit, the theme of ‘Buildings and Structures’ has been explored widely through the lines of inquiry. Our previous unit How the World Works ‘Materials’ has been used as a foundation to the new unit as they have been able to identify the materials used in modern and historical buildings and structures to assess durability.

Through the lines of inquiry, the Grade 1 students have used classroom materials such as wooden building blocks, plastic connecting cubes and straws with playdough to create their own buildings and structures. They created models of towers, bridges and houses using their understanding of which shapes made building and structures durable as they were tested against the weight of plastic cars and the shaking movement of the classroom desks.

Our Grade 1 students thoroughly enjoyed using their team working skills, knowledge, and risk-taking abilities to complete this task and then reflecting on how on work that they have accomplished.

Little Hands, Big Hearts: Caring Through the Ages

Our Grade 2 classes have been exploring the IB unit of inquiry, “Who We Are.” This unit focuses on understanding the stages of growth and development and recognizing our responsibilities towards both the young and the elderly. Through various activities, students have learned about the physical, emotional, and social changes that occur as people grow.

They have also discussed how they can support and care for people at different life stages.

One of the highlights of our unit was conducting student interviews. These interviews allowed the students to share personal experiences and insights about their own growth and the responsibilities they feel towards their families. It was wonderful to see the students reflect on how they can help their younger siblings and show respect and care for their grandparents.

Overall, this unit has helped our students develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their roles in their communities. They are now more aware of the importance of empathy, respect, and responsibility towards people of all ages. We are proud of their growth and the thoughtful discussions that have taken place in our classrooms.

The Active Planet

During this unit (HOW THE WORLD WORKS), students explored the earth’s natural phenomena, students engaged in discussions, research, and discovery. They delved into understanding the causes and impacts of various natural occurrences. Central themes such as form, causation (identifying causes) and change (observing earth’s transformation) were emphasized. Students actively imposed inquiries and conducted their own research to find answers. Their keen interest was evident, as they sought to relate classroom learning to real-life scenarios. Utilizing diverse resources such as YouTube videos, news, articles, and social media; they connected theoretical knowledge to practical situations. For instance, they discussed the recent flood in Dubai and its implications for the country. By integrating multimedia resources and current events, students enriched their understanding of the earth’s dynamic processes.

the global swap shop

This term our grade 4 students had the opportunity to grow their knowledge when they learned about different materials in the world around them. This included learning about new materials, how it is made, and how they use it in their everyday lives.

They studied how these materials could be changed, manipulated or combined to form different materials which have unique new functions. The students also investigated what different materials were made of and how it could be combined to be used in the design and construction of buildings.

How the World Works

“How the World Works” is a transdisciplinary theme within the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) that encourages students to explore and understand the natural world and its laws, the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies, and how humans use their understanding of scientific principles. Through provocations, students are guided into inquiry about the theme and their questions and predictions for the unit is then noted down for later research. For our Central Idea we focused on’ Matter and New Materials that affect the Way We Live’. In the classroom, this theme involves inquiry-based learning where students engage in hands-on activities, experiments, and research projects. In groups, students researched about matter and presented their findings to the class. These activities help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they investigate topics such properties and states of matter and, and the principles of scientific inquiry.

The lines of inquiry investigated were ’States and Properties of Matter’ as well as “Changes in Matter and their Effect on our Daily Lives.” Around these focal points, ‘Form’ and ‘Causation’ were explored where students investigated what the different states of matter were as well as what causes these changes and the impact they have on our lives. As a focal point throughout our research, students could reflect on how they have used the IB attributes of ‘Inquirer’ and ‘Knowledgeable’ and ATL skills of ‘Research’ and ‘Thinking’ to collaboratively work in group to achieve a specific outcome. Together, these lines of inquiry help students develop a holistic understanding of the world, blending scientific knowledge with an awareness of human impact and responsibility.

Unit of Inquiry: How to Express Yourself

Fifth grade students are currently exploring the transdisciplinary skill of ‘How to Express Yourself’. Media is the topic being explored under this banner. Students have brainstormed the subject during guided class discussions and developed a central idea and lines of inquiry. The purpose of this unit is to develop an awareness and understanding of the influence of media on society. Different forms of media and the advantages and disadvantage of social media are essential areas of this unit because students must be able to orientate themselves in the digital and the real world.

Ms. Lucinda Wessels

PYP Homeroom Teacher.

Grade 5 Boys’ Unit of Inquiry- (Media)

The transdisciplinary theme “How we express ourselves” explores the ways in which people create and communicate ideas, feelings, and beliefs through various forms of expression.

This theme encourages students to examine the role of culture, language, and media in shaping individual and collective identities.

Media, as a powerful tool of expression, plays a central role in this theme.

It encompasses a wide range of platforms including print, broadcast, digital, and social media.

Through media, individuals and groups convey their perspectives, values, and narratives to a larger audience, influencing opinions and shaping societal discourse.

Students were eager to unpack the theme and created their own central idea that drove lines of inquiry for research and reflection.

By exploring these aspects of media within the context of “How we express ourselves,” students developed a deeper understanding of the complexities of communication and expression in a globalized world. They learned to critically evaluate media messages, expressed themselves effectively through various mediums, and contributed to constructive dialogue and cultural exchange.

Encouraging reading habits in our students

In our fast-paced digital world, the enduring habit of reading remains crucial for students’ growth and development. As an English teacher, I recognize the immense benefits of reading: it enhances critical thinking, expands vocabulary, and nurtures empathy by exposing students to diverse cultures and perspectives. To cultivate a love for reading, we must create a supportive environment at home and school. This can be achieved by modeling reading behavior, providing diverse materials with engaging topics that students are interested in, and setting aside dedicated reading times unhindered by digital media. The JKS Summer Reading list is a great place to start! Discussing books and encouraging regular bookstore or library visits can also enhance the reading experience. The long-term benefits of reading are profound, contributing to academic success, better mental health, and informed citizenship. Let us encourage our students to turn off their social media, open a book (albeit a digital or eBook), and embark on endless adventures through reading. In the words of George R.R. Martin, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The person who never reads lives only one.”

Summer Is a Time for Responsible Fun

As the summer vacation approaches, it’s a perfect opportunity for students to unwind, explore new hobbies, and spend quality time with family and friends. However, it is equally important to remember that summer should be a time for responsible fun.

Stay Safe: Whether you’re traveling, attending events, or spending time outdoors, prioritize safety. Follow guidelines for health and well-being, such as wearing sunscreen, staying hydrated, and being mindful of your surroundings.

Balance Relaxation and Productivity: While it’s crucial to take a break from academic pressures, try to maintain a balance. Engage in activities that stimulate your mind, like reading, learning a new skill, or participating in educational programs.

Respect the Environment: Summer offers many opportunities to enjoy nature. Be mindful of your impact on the environment. Practice sustainable habits, like reducing waste, recycling, and conserving water.

Stay Connected: Use this time to strengthen relationships. Whether it’s family gatherings, reconnecting with friends, or community involvement, fostering strong social connections is key to a fulfilling summer.

Plan Ahead: If you have projects or academic goals for the next school year, start planning now. This can help reduce stress later and ensure you’re prepared for the upcoming academic challenges.

Enjoy your summer break, but remember to make choices that reflect responsibility and care for yourself, others, and the world around you. Have a wonderful and safe summer vacation!

Students must use AI ethically

Empowering students to use AI ethically in a school involves educating them about the responsible use of AI technology and fostering a culture of ethical awareness and critical thinking. We can do this by:

  1. Research and Learning: Students must be empowered to use AI powered tools for research, learning and problem solving.  For example, they can use AI based search engines to find information for assignments and projects but they must be taught to critically evaluate the credibility and reliability of the content and to site it properly.
  2. Creative expression: AI tools can be used for creative expression such as generating art, music, or writing but they must be mindful of copyright and intellectual property rights.
  3. Digital citizenship: Teach students about the rights and responsibility of the digital citizenship, including ethical behaviour, online safety, and respectful communication.
  4. Data analysis and visualization: Teach students how to use AI-powered data analysis and visualization tools to explore and interpret data. Emphasize the importance of ethical data collection, privacy protection, and informed consent when working with sensitive or personal data.
  5. Reflection and evaluation: Provide opportunities for students to reflect on their use of AI technologies, evaluate the ethical implications of their decisions, and consider alternative approaches or solutions.

If you can imagine it, you can design it

So…here is the process that helps you to design!

. Imagine (Wild Idea Time!): Close your eyes and picture the awesomest, silliest thing you can build. A flying spaghetti monster hat? A robot powered by laughter? Go nuts! This is where the crazy ideas hatch.

. Gather (The Great Scavenger Hunt): Time to raid the recycling bin and your parents’ toolbox (with permission, of course!). Cardboard box, toilet paper rolls, buttons with googly eyes – anything goes! It’s like a treasure hunt for the coolest crafting supplies.

. Build (Sticky Fingers and Laughter): Here comes the fun part! Glue sticks at the ready, it’s time to turn your crazy idea into a messy masterpiece. Don’t worry if it looks a little wonky – that’s what makes it special (and maybe a little bit hilarious).

. Show off (Ta-Da!): Gather your family and pets (stuffed animals work too) for the grand unveiling! Explain how your awesome creation works, even if it’s just making funny noises. Remember, the sillier the explanation, the better!

. Play (Fun Time!): This is the best part! Use your amazing creation however you like. Have a tea party with your robot butler, Fly your spaghetti monster hat to the moon (in your imagination!), or turn your cardboard fort into a secret headquarters for your stuffed animal army. The possibilities are endless (and probably a little bit loud!).

How to use your summer productively

As the summer vacation approaches, many 11th and 12th-grade students are eagerly anticipating a well-deserved break from the pressures of school. While it is essential to relax and recharge during this time, it is also a great opportunity to use the summer vacation productively and get ahead for the upcoming school year.

One way for 11th and 12th-grade students to make the most of their summer vacation is to begin preparing for their college applications. This could involve researching potential colleges, working on personal statements or essays, and gathering letters of recommendation. By starting this process early, students can alleviate some of the stress associated with applying to college during their senior year.

Another productive way for students to spend their summer vacation is to volunteer or intern in a field that interests them. This not only enhances college applications but also provides valuable experience and helps students determine their future college majors or career paths.

Lastly, 11th and 12th-grade students should work on their assigned summer work to enhance their academic skills and make themselves well-prepared for the upcoming school year. It is also recommended that they take SAT prep courses to improve their chances of being accepted into the universities they wish to attend.

In conclusion, there are multiple ways for 11th and 12th-grade students to make the most of their summer vacation and ensure they are using their time wisely. By setting goals, staying organized, and remaining motivated, students can return to school in September feeling refreshed, inspired, and ready to tackle the challenges of the upcoming school year.

Celebrating a Year of Success

Another school year flies by, and what a ride it has been! We’re bursting with pride as we reflect on a year packed with amazing achievements.

This academic year started with a successful PYP/MYP evaluation visit, celebrating the implementation of the IB programs. The positive feedback we received helped us improve and confirmed all the hard work we put into making our school a dynamo of learning. It was the perfect start that set the tone for the rest of the year, guiding us toward continuous improvement and success.

Throughout the year, students and teachers worked hard together. We saw amazing projects and activities both in and out of the classroom. Everyone’s dedication made our school a great place to learn and grow.

Our end-of-year exhibition was a big success, showcasing the hard work and creativity of our students. Parents enjoyed seeing the impressive personal projects G10 students have completed. The Auto Engineering demo and robotics reflected the variety of elective courses we offer, in addition to the photography and cinematography exhibition. The culinary arts display also highlighted the diverse skills our students have developed.

As we move into the next school year, we look forward to building on what we’ve learned and continuing our journey of excellence with your continued support.

Ms. Raghad Al Sheikh

It’s a wrap, folks!!!

The expression above, although more familiar to those in the movies industry, is just as applicable to school!

The anticipation for the end of the exams and the start of the summer vacation was near palpable. Both students and staff are looking forward to a well-deserved break after excelling throughout the year.

The year was jam-packed with activities that helped students grow and staff further develop as professionals.

From the Staff Induction Week to the Student Orientation, the school year kicked off on a positive note that weaved through our CISNEACS/IB preparatory visits to our JKS TEDx Conference, Mark It Day, JKSMUN, the Whole School Exhibition and the cherry on the top, our productions, and Graduation ceremonies.

Although a busy year, we kept our eyes on the prize: the holistic education of our students. Never wavering from this commitment, the school ensured that our students are better prepared and more confident to face the next grade level and the future.

As the lights dim, and the hallways empty out, I wish the JKS community a restful vacation with family and friends. I look forward to the next academic year when we will unite with one common goal and purpose in mind: making learning fun for our students so that they become lifelong learners while reaching their full potential.

Realize your potential: The influence of student self-evaluation

Being able to evaluate oneself academically is an essential skill for students to have as they traverse the academic environment. Self- Assessment motivates students to actively participate in their education by considering their areas of strengths, pinpointing areas that need work, and establishing worthwhile objectives for development. Students get a greater grasp of their own learning preferences, cognitive processes, and areas of competence through regular self-assessment. Reflective practice improves academic performance while promoting the growth of vital life skills like self-control, problem-solving, and critical thinking. In the end, using self-assessment techniques helps students develop into effective, motivated, and autonomous learners who are prepared for long-term success in and out of the classroom.

IMPORTANCE OF THE BRAG SHEET

In grade 11 you will be asked to complete a Brag Sheet. Why is a brag sheet important you might ask?

The most important reason is that it will give your teachers the information needed to write a strong, meaningful, and insightful recommendation letter for your university applications. Without your brag sheet, teacher recommendations could end up generic and boring. Your brag sheet provides a personal view of who you are beyond the standard metrics of grades and test scores. It gives the teacher insight into your character, personality, dreams and goals. Which is why it is crucial to complete the brag sheet with as much evidence as possible of where and how you demonstrated your strengths. Be specific! Give examples of things that you want the teacher to highlight, such as your personal strengths and values. This is your place to shine!
